ABOUT

Salutations, sweetheart. I’m Sui.

My name is pronounced sway. I write to connect, heal, and inspire, and I create for open hearts.

I write and publish: poetry, prose, and personal narrative, among other things. I capture the love and light I see in the world. Sometimes, I even speak my words out loud.

Built and designed first website from scratch in Notepad at age 8; registered first domain at 12 (dubbed blatantly after a Lord of the Rings reference, if you care to know); earned first official freelance $20 (not counting teaching a 7-year-old how to play Für Elise on the piano at age 9, that is) at 13 (graphics/web design). Started first love revolution, own business, and shooting professionally at age 19. Published first print poetry and prose anthology at age 20; have written and published seven more books, fiction and non-fiction alike, since. Received first rejection letter from The New Yorker at age 18. (Have yet to try for another one. Yet.)

In a past life, worked as a waitress/bringer of drinks/Chinese-English translator for less than $100USD monthly in Shanghai, China, and hardware store cashier and maker of clandestinely-saccharine drinks in the suburbs of Northern California. First touched melody-makers piano, violin, and guitar at ages 3, 9, and 14, respectively. Attempted to start first band– an all-female, three-person black metal outfit– at 14. (Gave up on the idea nearly immediately.) Am, and have been proficient, in varying fluctuations of fluency, in Shanghainese, Mandarin, Japanese, Spanish, French, Classical Latin, and Korean.

Born, and somewhat self-bred, in Shanghai; raised in the San Francisco Bay Area; and thus have nested in San Diego, Montréal, New York City, and Los Angeles. Presently, I live in a city surrounded by water (Seattle).

Most crucially, I believe in love and life.
